If you’re reluctant to ever take time away from your daily life for travel, you should reconsider. Traveling isn’t just a break from the ordinary. Research shows us it’s also good for our health, both mentally and physically. It doesn’t have to be expensive luxury trips abroad, either. Even something as simple as renting an RV and going to San Antonio or some other U.S. city that has always fascinated you is going to bring you immeasurable benefits in your life.

The following are some of the ways traveling is good for our mental and physical health, and can help us become all-around happier people.

Something To Look Forward To

We all can feel a bit down sometimes, but that can lead to other more far-reaching effects. Sometimes it leads to losing motivation and declining productivity at work. Happiness is important, and planning a trip can help you feel happier, and boost your mood.

It’s not just while you’re on your trip when these effects are felt.

Studies show that even the effects of looking forward to the trip can boost your mood and help you feel better about most other aspects of your life.

It’s Good For Relationships

Our relationships are a cornerstone of our lives. Having strong relationships with our spouses and family can improve our well-being.

Going on a trip with loved ones can deepen relationships, and give us shared experiences. Think back to our example above about taking an RV trip. Whether you’re taking this trip with your spouse, your children, or anyone else important to you in your life, it can go a long way to helping you create memories and feel closer to one another.

Heart Health

Heart health is a big priority for most people. A study conducted by the Global Commission on Aging and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, along with the U.S. Travel Association, found some positive possible heart benefits associated with traveling.

The study showed that women who went on vacations at least twice a year had a lower risk of heart attack than women who only traveled every six years or so.

For men, the risk of death was 20 percent higher in individuals who didn’t take a yearly vacation. The study also showed they had a 30 percent higher risk of developing heart disease.

Reduce Stress

Having high levels of stress and anxiety is bad for our mental health, our relationships and even our physical health.

Traveling is one way to combat high-stress levels.

There have been studies showing that following a trip, people reported feeling not only happier and more rested but also had higher mood levels, and these effects can hang on for weeks following a trip.

Finally, creativity is important in our lives. If you’re feeling stuck at work or on a particular project, taking a trip might help spark creativity. A study that was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology showed a link between traveling and creativity, and this might be because the neural pathways of the brain are influenced by the environment you’re in.
