What Are You Thinking?

James Allen, in his book, As A Man Thinketh states, “All that a man achieves and all that he  fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts.” Notice that there are no qualifiers in that statement. The word is ALL – ALL  that he achieves or does not achieve is the DIRECT result of his thoughts. So I ask you again, “What are you thinking?”

Think about this statement for a few moments and reflect on your own thought patterns before you move on.

What are YOU thinking?

If you had a computer connected to your brain that could record every thought you have during a day or week and then was able to analyze and categorize these thoughts according to tone, meaning, intention and frequency what would you discover?

Would you discover that you have absolutely no control over your thoughts – that they are so scattered that they hardly make a pattern at all? Or would you find that they are rigid and fixed on only a few topics so nothing new can be formulated?  Would you find that they are expansive and positive or restricted and negative? Would you find that they are often mean-spirited and exclusive or that they are compassionate and  expensive? Would you discover that they are often about things that are beautiful and uplifting or about the ugly and downgrading? Do you generally find the good in people and things or do you seek out the bad and negative?

If you can’t stay focused long enough to examine your thinking, then examine your life. It is a direct reflection of your thoughts.

  • Have you achieved the goals you set for yourself?
  • Are you surrounded with the people and things that reflect your success?
  • Are you in good health?
  • Do you feel content with your life?
  • Do you have big regrets?
  • Do you need to cast blame? e.g., I would be a millionaire now if only … Or, I didn’t have the opportunities I needed to …

Let’s have a reality check here.

What were/are your thoughts that kept/keep you from having what you want or created what you do not want? Some possibilities:

  • I don’t have the right education or skills
  • Poor me. I just can’t catch a break
  • I’m not as good at this as ___________
  • I don’t deserve it
  • I came from a poor family
  • No one gave me a chance
  • I would have been able to do that but I didn’t have time
  • No one picked me
  • I don’t think I can do that
  • My father said I wouldn’t amount to anything and he was right
  • I’m too old; I’m too young; I’m too fat; I’m too thin; I’m too – whatever – to do that
  • I wanted to but no one would help me
  • I don’t have enough money to do that
  • I’m afraid that if I make a lot of money people will take advantage of me
  • I’m afraid that if I become successful people will expect too much of me
  • You can add your own here – most of us have some to share

What would happen if you set this kind of thinking aside and said, “Wow! I can do this” ?

Thoughts are Things

Thoughts are things. They are powerful and creative. If you were responsible for a laser that cut right through metal objects you would be very careful in handling it. Thoughts are much more powerful and they are very creative.

Pay attention.

Begin today to take control of where your mind wanders and what you do with your thoughts. It is the most important thing you can do to gain control of your life and create the life you want.
