It’s important to understand the relationship between health and wellness and know how to build it. Often the terms health and wellness are used interchangeably which creates a lot of confusion in understanding the differences and the relationship between the two. Since both these concepts have a lot of differences and variances, it deserves some recognition and probing.

It is only when you know about the differences between health and wellness that you will be able to establish a relation between the two and know how exactly you can work actively with both to achieve success. In fact, both health and wellness seem to be the most pressing question in businesses today.

However different these two concepts, you simply cannot have one without the other, really. There are lots of reasons to say so but before diving into it, you must know what each of it actually stands for.

Health versus wellness

The best way to understand health versus wellness is to isolate the respective definitions.

According to the World Health Organization, WHO, health is defined as the state of complete physical, mental as well as social well-being. They say it is not merely restricted to the absence of disease or infirmity. In addition to that, they say that the primary determinants of health include:

  • Social
  • Physical and
  • Economic  environments

It also includes the individual characteristics and behaviors of a person with no relation or any distinction of religion, race, political belief, social or economic condition.

On the other hand, WHO defines wellness as the ideal state of health of any individuals or groups. They go on to add that it is also the expression of a positive approach to healthy and happier living.

If you follow Merriam-Webster you will find that wellness is defined as that specific quality or state in which a person is in good health, especially when it is a goal that is sought for actively.

Wellness as it is, is also encompassed by eight different components such as:

  • Emotional
  • Environmental
  • Financial
  • Intellectual
  • Occupational
  • Physical
  • Social  and
  • Spiritual

Cohesively, it can be said that wellness is a dynamic and active process of change and it is the growth to attain the fullest potential and targets to enhance the overall wellbeing of a person.

The importance of both

Health and wellness are not only important for your overall wellbeing and enhancement of your life expectancy, but it is also required in all aspects of life, commerce, and finance as well, though each has a variance in its applications across different industries.

You will be surprised to know that even ill-health of your financial matters can take a heavy toll on your health. It is a proven fact that people who carry large amounts of debt and especially those who find difficulty to keep up with their monthly repayment schedule have poor health as compared to those who have no or manageable debt. Overwhelming debts may lead to health issues, serious and minor such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disorders
  • Heart risks and much more.

The relationship between health and wellness

Therefore, going by the distinct definitions it can be concluded that wellness has a direct effect on overall health which in turn is vital for living a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life. In short, if health is your goal, then wellness is the process that will actively and effectively help you to achieve your goal.

Two distinct scenarios will help you to grasp health and wellness better and make a conscious choice:

  • Health is a predisposition to diagnosis of type I diabetes or heart disease at an early age or even an unforeseen brain injury and
  • Wellness is making a choice to have a balanced diet, schedule doctor visits on a regular basis, and exercise more often.

Additionally, most of the people attribute accomplishing a specific set number on the scale that dictates health. However, as mentioned earlier, you cannot really have health without attaining wellness first. Therefore, before you set your own goals for health, you should ask a few specific questions to yourself as to why and what exactly you want from your newly sought out revolution. For that matter, you must consider asking questions like:

  • What is the exact reason for your wanting to lose weight?
  • Are you doing it to satisfy others or just yourself?
  • How will this positive change impact your life?
  • Is this your short-term or long-term goal?
  • What kind of support system do you have?
  • What are the specific areas of your life you want to focus on?

All these answers will help you significantly to know what you truly want from health and wellness and at the same time, it will help you to design a better personal plan that will work best for you.

Ways to improve health and wellness

You can target health goal and weight loss but the sustainability of it will largely depend on how well and actively you improve within the diverse components of wellness. If you want to nurture it on an ongoing basis, consider doing the following:

  • Eat whole foods as that is the most natural and direct way to impact your physical condition, mental health, boosting memory and improving your mood
  • Exercise regularly as it will stimulate a healthy mind and body
  • Embrace mental exercises as that will boost your brainpower and support intellectual wellness
  • Get quality sleep as it strengthens concentration and memory, lowers stress, increases energy, reduces cravings, and controls hunger levels.

Also make it a point that you take enough rest to ensure recovery and enjoy your social circles or support networks. All these are invaluable for your health and overall wellbeing providing you with a sense of purpose.
