When you’ve reached your retirement age, you may begin to think about moving to a new area. However, since there are so many ways to go about finding a new living situation, you might be wondering: where do I even begin? What are the best cities for seniors?

If you could move anywhere, then would you want to live? A larger urban area, someplace that has the amenities of a big city in a smaller package, or somewhere a little more out of the way?

The truth is that there are a number of cities in the U.S. that have lower costs of living and more opportunities and amenities for seniors. If you have no other reason to move to a particular place, you may want to consider a move to one of these senior-friendly locations.

Affordability of real estate is a large factor, but there are other variables to think about when considering better places for senior living. Some criteria for livability in many studies include both finance-based metrics as well as other community factors like coastal views, crime rates, pleasant citizens or weather.  You can find one of the best cities for seniors in each size of city.

The Best Big City is in Texas

At the top of several “most livable city” lists, including US News & World Report is Austin, Texas. The city keeps growing, meaning there are more cultural opportunities than ever and the population is known to be particularly friendly (and yes,  maybe a little weird). It also features amenities of larger cities without the added hassle. Things like great dining options and an amazing arts scene are good reasons to take up residence in the heart of Texas.

A Mid-Sized Paradise

Perhaps not surprising to those in the know, the unassuming city of Boise, Idaho tops a number of lists as the very best place in the US to live. Not only does it feature a booming economy and beautiful vistas, but it’s also known as one of the best cities for seniors.  It is a wonderful place to retire.

Named the best large city for senior living, as it features a relatively low cost of living, as well as a large number (per capita) of medical facilities. The crime rate is low and it even has tax benefits for seniors because social security income in the city is not taxable. Many people are finding themselves moving to Boise from comparably sized cities – its population has reached over 215,000.

Smaller (and Greener) Towns

If you are looking for a smaller place to call home, the more homey and historic city of Greenville, South Carolina is “having a moment”, according to Livability. There is haute cuisine to enjoy along with the natural beauty of being nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountain range. But the major criteria here is affordability, and Greenville is inexpensive, safe, and has a very nice climate to boot.

Similarly, Coral Gables, Florida is also known for its year-round warm weather and a large amount of green space and tree-lined boulevards. It’s easy-to-access location along with 35 senior properties and four healthcare facilities make it the perfect small town for seniors.

These cities typify the kind of places that you might want to look for if you are trying to find a fresh start after retirement. The best cities for seniors are not limited to this list, but this is a good start. With pleasant populations and weather that is generally pretty pleasant, you can look to these urban centers as an excellent way to start your retired life in a great locale.
