leadership skills

It doesn’t matter what field you are in if you want to advance in your career to a leadership position, there are certain skills you must have or develop along the way. Even though you have heard it said that some people are “born leaders,” this isn’t always true. These are the people who recognized what it took to become a good leader and were willing to put in the effort to grow along with the job. These are the fundamental leadership skills you need if you are intent on advancing your career.

1. Passion for What You Do

There is no one more ineffective as a leader as someone who simply has a laissez-faire attitude about their job or the company for which they work. If you want to gain a leadership position, it is important that you love what you do. You must be passionate about your job and also your company. This is what is meant by “he’s a company man.” It means that you are committed to doing and giving the best you have because you recognize that your growth and company growth are intertwined.

2. Integrity

Integrity may be one of those traits you either have or you don’t. The person with integrity strives always to do the right thing for the right reasons. A leader with integrity is honest in their dealings with other people and will inspire others to be the same.

3. Working Knowledge of Industry Specific Productivity Technology

You may think that your job doesn’t require you to have any technological expertise, but even an office worker seeking to become office manager needs to be familiar with technology as it impacts their duties. IT and communications are heavily reliant on being tech savvy, and if you take the time to learn about specific software that automatically syncs information between Cloud-based platforms like HubSpot and Mailchimp, you will have an advantage over the person seeking that leadership role who relies on manually synchronizing data between the two. Becoming familiar with apps like Piesync will give you the competitive edge – there is no doubt about it.

4. The Ability to Delegate as Needed

Some people who have worked their way up to leadership positions have never learned the art and science of delegation. They get job burnout way too quickly because they are afraid to leave tasks and responsibilities in the hands of others. In fact, why would you have anyone on your team in the first place if they couldn’t be trusted to get the job done? Don’t try to do too much because, in the end, you will be the one who suffers for it.

5. Accountability

Finally, as a leader you must be willing to be held accountable for everything that goes on in your team. Even if you delegated a task to someone who didn’t follow through, the buck stops with you. That’s why you need to learn the fine art of delegation and the responsibility to let loose the broken links in the chain. You are going to be accountable, so it’s up to you to make sure your ‘machine’ is working efficiently.

As you can see, some of these leadership skills are inherent but others can be learned. Do you possess these skills? If so, it’s time to make the move to advance in your career. There’s no time like the present.
