Happy Valentine’s Day to all the readers of The Self Improvement Blog but especially to one very special reader and the love of my life—Jack— best friend, “significant other,” magnificent photographer, kindest human being I’ve known, dog-lover, great cook, and many other superlatives.
I thought I knew what love was. We all think we do, I guess. But I have never experienced anything like this.
I would tell you the story, but today is about you, too.
Life is better lived in twos—he and she—regardless of the species. But the caveat here is that the twos have to match in so many ways and bring differences that keep things interesting. Before we ever met in person, Jack sent me a link to The Five Languages of Love by Gary Chapman. The link is to the book for singles, but you can also get it for couples. We discovered that we “speak the same language” according to Chapman and it truly does make a difference.
Rumi says, “The soul is here for its own joy.” Is there any greater joy that to love someone without reservation and know that you are loved in return. It took me 80 years to find it. Don’t give up.
These wonderful pictures of “couples” were taken by Jack and he let me share them with you for the day.
To find this kind of love you have to begin by learning to love and accept yourself. Sometimes this is not an easy thing because of the things people have said to us and the negative things we have said to ourselves. Some of us were taught that loving ourselves is not o.k. Well, that’s simply not true. When you love, appreciate and accept yourself
you are able to love, appreciate and accept another.
So today, look yourself straight on in the mirror and tell yourself as much as you are able to about how much you love, appreciate and respect YOU. Then go find your partner and do the same. (It may be a shock to them so be ready for any kind of reaction).
I will simply leave it there and wish you a very Happy Valentine’s Day.
