When something is not used for a long time, it usually begins to go through negative changes. For example, an abandoned piece of bread begins to support fungus growth while a forgotten nail polish hardens with time – both being useless. If this can happen to material things, then why is our brain any different? This is where brain stimulation activities can help with brain fitness.

Our brain consists of cells and neurons. These cells are responsible for carrying messages from the brain to the body so that it can function properly. If the cells are weak or damaged, it is most likely to trigger behavioral and physiological changes. People who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s show symptoms such as memory loss, cognitive and speech impairment, etc. The core reason for both these conditions are the damaged cells in the brain, which causes a problem in the process of sending messages. Another explanation is the issue that arises during the firing of the neurons within the brain. Either they are too fast, or too slow. This can cause the person to go through a considerable level of behavioral and symptomatic change.

Leaving your mind idle is not a good way to go considering the effects that it has on your health. Through brain stimulation activities, people suffering from dementia can decrease the severity of their symptoms and get a chance to live their life as close to normal as possible.

Here are a few brain simulation activities that can help people suffering from dementia:


When a person reads, the brain cells are automatically stirred, as they get busy with imagining and understanding what the words mean. This is a good exercise as it allows the person to create new memories and situations in his mind. Reading material can range from storybooks, to newspapers, or even attractive picture magazines. Research suggests that material with bright and colorful pictures is more helpful compared to a page full of words.


Remembering or following a recipe enables the person to stress his brain enough for it to be considered healthy. Stress is beneficial for the brain in some cases as it helps in the stimulation process. As you cook, there is a significant amount of thought process going on up there. Each dish requires a procedure, certain ingredients in different quantities. In addition, tasting your favorite food on your tongue sends a message to the brain, which also comes under brain stimulation.


Talking is a great way of getting those brain juices flowing as it helps the person focus on memories, opinions, and debatable issues. This can be done at home as well as with a psychologist. A professional therapist can provide a secure environment for people to share their thoughts and whatever they are feeling. This allows them to decrease the burden they feel because of their diagnosed condition. Other than this, having a conversation with a loved one can help the person reminiscence on past memories, which improves their ability to remember.

Memory Interactive Games:

Games are generally known to sharpen the mind. Games that target memory interaction are even better as they are a great source of entertainment. The games that are targeted towards dementia patients are much more simple and do not have a ‘win-lose’ situation. Instead, they are based on strategy, memory, color, shape, etc. which makes it much more enjoyable as well as less frustrating. Some great examples are Shake Loose a Memory and Qwirkle.

It should be noted that these activities are not only for dementia patients. These tasks can improve anyone’s mental ability and sharpness, as well as slow the overall ageing process!
