Last week I mentioned an upgraded bonus offer in the world of travel hacking. There’s one more that I left out while I was doing some travel hacking myself, flying off to Barcelona, Doha, and London.
For a limited time, the American Express Gold Card is offering a 50,000 point signup bonus. Last week, if you applied for the card, you’d get 40,000 points. Not bad… but this week, you’ll get 50,000 points from the same offer. Hint: this week is better.
I have this card myself, and in fact it’s the very first business card I ever received WAY back in 2000. Back then, there were no bonuses—I just earned 1 point for every $1 spent. I also didn’t receive a big bunch of points when I signed up. Times have changed for the better!
In addition to the signup bonus, you can also choose to receive 3x points on one of the following categories:
- Airfare purchased directly from airlines
- U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
- U.S. purchases at gas stations
- U.S. purchases for shipping
- U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers
You’ll earn 2x points on the remaining categories and 1x point on all other purchases. In other words, in addition to the bonus offer, you have the potential to earn a lot more points over time.
AmEx Membership Rewards points transfer on a 1:1 basis to more than 15 different airlines, including Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Virgin America, and Etihad. The best strategy is to keep them in the Membership Rewards account until you want to use them—then transfer them to the airline partner in which you’ll be redeeming miles. Before you make the transfer, make sure that the airline has award availability for the flights you want to take.
