Have you ever failed and something and then found a way to overcome your failure? Did you know that “Angry Birds” was created after 51 failed games? Most successful people/companies you know about have failed a lot of times before the world got to know about them. In fact, the only way to succeed is by stepping on the stone of failure.
It is human nature to feel disappointed when we fail at something especially when we have put lots of effort into it and there’s nothing much, we can do about it. However, instead of letting that feeling drag you down into negativity, you can train yourself to overcome your failures.
Overcome your Failure
Below are a few ways that will help you re-build your confidence and overcome your failures.
1. Accept that Failure is a Part of the Process
Here’s the thing about failures—they are a part of the process. No one is perfect. People fail when they try new things. Instead of feeding yourself with the thought of failure, start accepting the fact that it’s ok to fail.
The sooner you accept, the sooner the negative feeling goes away. As a result, you will be less distracted and more focused on trying things once again.
2. Change your Perspective about Failures
Think of failure as a setback. Remind yourself that this is not your final destination. Think of it as feedback and something that needs improvement.
Try to understand why you failed and you will know what went wrong. Use the knowledge as a weapon when trying again. Re-evaluate outcomes and decisions. The more you fail, the more you learn.
No, I’m not telling you to fail. I’m just telling you to don’t think failure as your final destination. I’m sure life has more for you than just failures and you have ways to overcome your failure.
3. Identify negative thought patterns.
Failure generally comes with the attitude to beat yourself up over it, even adding yourself negative tags. Learn to recognize some obvious negative thought patterns so you can avoid them. These patterns may include: all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing (This is it. I can’t go back from this situation) or harmful self-labeling. When you realize these kinds of feelings arise, question them. Look for evidence for and against these claims. Say it aloud to yourself that “if I’m doing things right and with positive attitude then I will succeed and make my dreams a reality. ”
4. Ignore What Others Say
No matter how much we try to avoid the pain of failure, it comes back. And, one such pain is dealing with people telling you “You should have taken my advice”, “I told you this won’t work”, “Quit it before it’s too late”.
There are critics everywhere in the world. But, instead of listening to them, focus on what’s important to you i.e. achieving your goals. Use the criticism as an inspiration and prove them wrong.
5. Give importance to Everyday Successes
We often define success with the final outcome. However, when you start considering the small everyday things as success, it will help you deal with the temporary failures and setbacks easily.
6. Improve your self-esteem
Improving self-esteem will help you handle setbacks and bounce back stronger than ever.
Failures won’t be able to drag you down to a level when you start feeling this is the end. It also makes it easier to see things with more clarity.
The first step towards improving self-esteem is accepting the fact that we are humans, we make mistakes, and everything is not my fault. Self-esteem isn’t built overnight and hence you need to make these things your habits.
7. Focus on the brighter side
Yeah, you failed, months or years of your efforts are wasted. What’s positive about this?
Well, take it this way. You were trying to build a rocket. You didn’t know everything about it when you started. You learned more things when you were actually building it than when you saw someone else build it. Though it failed, you learned a lot of things that will make it easier for you to build another rocket and that too in less time.
8. Let out your Frustration
Take some time off. Try to clear your head with whatever happened. If you’re thinking that “saying is easier than doing” then yes, you’re right. But I have tried this myself.
Working as a digital marketer at my own firm, I wasn’t able to generate real results for months though I knew what to do and how to do it. My partner asked me to then take some time off. I then went on to spend a few days with my family, no phone calls, no office stuff, nothing.
Eventually, the initial emotional rush dissipated and when I went back, my focus improved and I was able to generate real-results from day 1.
Life isn’t always easy. We need to accept our failures and focus on the brighter side to get going. It’s never too late to improve your self-esteem and it’s amazing how quickly you can change your perspective about things and reach a whole new level of success.
9. Find inspiration and support
A small talk with somebody close to you can be very useful. One more thing you can do is to listen to those who’ve reach where you want to go. Learn about how they handled obstacles and low-points before or during their achievement in books, on internet sites or online forums.
Or you can just get into the passion or motivation of someone else listening to a videos or audio book for maybe 30-60 minutes. Their knowledge could be of value to help you move forward.
And even if they haven’t experienced what you’re going through, you can still seek some guidance and/or fresh perspectives that will help you overcome your failure along your journey.
