Every college student knows just how stressful finals week can be. All those notes. All those books. All those study sessions. It’s downright exhausting. It can be tempting to want to stay up late every night, fuel yourself with loads of coffee, and eat junk food to keep you going. But those habits will not set you up for success. To reduce your stress and keep your head in the game, check out these seven tips from the pros on how to stay healthy during final exams.
Stay Healthy During Final Exams
1. Get Plenty of Sleep
It may seem like a good idea to stay up all night trying to cram for an exam or to review your notes one last time.
But that’s about the worst thing you can do.
If you want your body and mind to function at peak levels, a good night’s sleep is essential.
If you think you do your best studying late at night, try taking a few naps throughout the day. Without the proper amount of sleep, you’ll lose focus. Paying attention will be nearly impossible. And that’s never good when you need to read, re-read, and review what you’ve learned all semester.
A solid eight hours of sleep per night is the best way to go. But if you know you’re only going to get five or six hours at a time, schedule time to take a one or two-hour nap.
With the proper amount of rest each day, your brain will be able to function better and focus on the task at hand.
2. Stay Hydrated
Keeping your body hydrated is one of the most effective ways to keep your immune system running up to speed. You’ll need to feel your best if you want to make it through your finals successfully. A robust immune system is an essential part of that equation.
It’s also best to avoid sugary coffee drinks.
While downing coffee seems like a useful tool to keep you up so you can study longer, it’s not.
Remember this: with a heavy sugar intake you will inevitably crash. A little bit of sugar is okay, just don’t overdo it with those whip cream-filled Starbucks drinks that are more like a dessert than a coffee. (Sorry, but it’s true).
3. Eat Lots of Protein and Nutritious Snacks
This tip goes hand in hand with staying hydrated. Eating the proper foods can actually fuel your brain, boost your immune system, and keep you in tip-top shape.
So instead of reaching for the M&Ms or potato chips, grab some nutrient rich nuts or snack on fruits and veggies instead.
Leafy greens, avocados, peanut butter, and dark chocolate are just a few tasty and healthy snack options that help your brain perform better.
4. Maintain Good Hygiene
This may seem obvious, but we’ve seen plenty of college students skip a shower or two in order to get in extra study time.
Please do not do that!
A clean body (and mind) are a must if you want to have a successful week.
Keeping up with good hygiene is essential to keeping your immune system in order. The last thing you need during finals week is to get sick.
If you want to get through a long, hard week and stay healthy during final exams, you’ll need lots and lots of energy. And, like it or not, exercise is one of the best (and healthiest) ways to energize the body.
Forget about those double espresso shots and quick-fix energy drinks. Instead, take a few laps in the pool or run on the treadmill for twenty minutes.
Your body will feel better, you’ll have a chance to clear your mind, and you’ll be much more energized than if you drink a cup of coffee or eat a candy bar.
6. Skip the Parties (and the Alcohol)
It can be tempting to take a break from studying and head to a party or have a few beers. But one night of excessive partying can seriously derail your plans for a successful week of studying and test-taking.
If you have enough discipline to go out for an hour or two and have one or two beers, go for it. But if you know that one hour out will turn into a long night of drinking, don’t do it.
You could lose even more precious time by having to spend the next day in bed nursing a hangover.
7. Take Breaks
This may seem contradictory to your study plans, but taking breaks can actually boost productivity.
You can’t possibly study all day, every day, and every night leading up to finals week. It’s important to include a bit of downtime in your schedule.
Don’t be afraid to take an hour or two to enjoy dinner, watch a bit of TV, or hang out with friends. Downtime can actually re-energize you and reinvigorate your brain so you can function and focus more when you get back to work.
As a general rule of thumb, a 30 or 60-minute break every three to four hours is the way to go!
Everyone that’s been to college will agree: finals week is hard!
But that doesn’t mean you should torture yourself (or your body) by spending endless hours trying to cram.
No matter how hard you need to study, make sure you get some sleep. Boost your immune system by staying hydrated, drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol, and eating healthy snacks. Maintain good hygiene and get in some exercise to keep your mind and body fresh and clean.
Take breaks, but don’t party too much. While breaks will boost your productivity, too much partying and drinking can take a huge toll on the body.
