Here are some time management tips for those of you who are professional time-wasters.

You know, the kind of person who has 20 different tasks to achieve each day but instead, masters the art of procrastination and gets nothing done?

If you’re that person, I have good and bad news for you.

The good news is: you’re not the only one doing this.

The bad news is: you’re wrecking your life.

Okay. Maybe the word wrecking is a bit strong. But the point is, you’re not doing yourself any favors by procrastinating, failing to complete your daily tasks and wasting time.

With a busy schedule, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and distracted. And I get it, watching a YouTube video or scrolling through Instagram is more interesting than writing an essay on Shakespeare or doing laundry.

But you don’t have much of a choice, and if you learn to manage your time wisely, you’ll find that you can accomplish everything you need to that day, as well as have time for yourself.

6 Time Management Tips

Here are six tips that will help you change your area of expertise from professional time-waster, to professional time-master.

Planning is one of the most essential time management tips you need to develop if you want to manage your time effectively.

Although it can be tedious, it’s incredibly helpful to have a clear outline as to how your day needs to go, and the specific goals you need to achieve.

There are three practical ways you can plan to manage your time wisely:

Plan at the beginning of the week

Every Sunday, take a few minutes to list everything you want to achieve in the coming week. Whether it’s schoolwork, house chores or appointments, write it all down.

In a planner, jot down on which day and ideally, at what time you’ll achieve each of these tasks.

Looking at your week from a bird’s eye view will make it easier for you to squeeze everything you need to do, and it’ll make you realize how much time you have.

Plan the night before

If the thought of planning for an entire week overwhelms you, make it a habit to plan the night before. Knowing exactly what needs to be done the following day helps to minimize stress if you have a busy schedule.

Plan first thing in the morning

Not a fan of planning the night before either? Just write your list of to-do’s in the morning after you wake up.

Tip – if you prefer, you can download a planner app instead of writing everything down. It’ll make you save more time.

Once you’ve written the list of tasks that need to be achieved, you need to prioritize. Scan your list and circle three of the most urgent goals, work on completing those first.

It’s a good idea to start with the task that’ll require the most effort, as it’ll save you more time for the other tasks.

Remove distractions

We’re all guilty of scrolling through Facebook when we should be working. Or having an unnecessary phone call with a friend instead of completing unfinished tasks.  This is one of the time management tips that you need to pay attention to.

Removing distractions is essential for effective time management, and you can do this in several ways:

  • Be strict with yourself. Think about the consequences of not doing what needs to be done, and practice self-discipline.
  • Don’t be afraid of saying no. If your friends, colleagues or family members are distracting you, don’t be ashamed of telling them that you are busy and now is not a good time to speak with you.
  • If find yourself distracted by social media all the time, download an app that temporarily blocks those websites.

Set a time limit for each task

Setting a specific time limit for each task is another great time management tip.

You can do this using the Pomodoro technique. Work for 25 minutes on a specific task, then take a 5-minute break and get back to work for 25 minutes.

This is an excellent productivity hack that helps you achieve whatever needs to be done without feeling overwhelmed, and it’s a great strategy you can use to manage your time effectively.

Multitask wisely

Multi-tasking is one of the best ways you can manage your time, but it needs to be done wisely.

Typing an email while simultaneously having an important phone call is an example of poor multitasking. You’re not saving time, you’re wasting it.

Well, your brain can’t focus on those two things at once, you end up making mistakes on one or both tasks.

Examples of good multitasking are reading emails while you’re having breakfast, or during your lunch break.

If you enjoy listening to podcasts or audiobooks, do so while driving to work or doing house chores.

Wake up earlier

I’ve kept this tip till last because let’s be honest, no one wants to be told they need to wake up early. But this trick might be exactly what you need to manage your time wisely.

Getting up an hour or two earlier will leave you extra time to get stuff done. You can scan through your to-do list, and consider what task you could complete in the morning.

Waking up early is a pain, but you’ll thank yourself later for doing it.

So there you have it. Five tips that will help you manage your time effectively, be more productive and get stuff done. And remember, time management is one of the most important skills to develop if you want to be successful in whatever you do.

Are you a professional time-waster?  Then these time management tips are for you. Use them.
