5 Daily Work Routines to Make it Home for Dinner

Tired of working late every night? We have a guide for you! These five work routines will help you be more productive at work so you can get home for dinner!

Whether they’re a busy student or a working professional, everyone has a work routine:

You show up at work (or school), handle your responsibilities, and head home at the end of the day.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. Too many people find themselves working late.

Sound familiar?

Well, I have some advice. In order to finish work on time, you need to start incorporating routines into your workday.

5 Daily Work Routines to Make it Home for Dinner

Below, I’ll discuss five daily work routines that will help you get more work done. Follow these routines, and you’re sure to make it home by dinnertime. Doesn’t that sound nice?

1. Start Scheduling Your Days

So, we’ve established that our goal is to get you home for supper. To do that, you must start structuring your days.

This means waking up every day at the same time (I know that the snooze button is tempting!) and starting work at the same time.

I don’t mean getting to work at 9:00 AM, either…I mean starting your first task at 9:05 on the dot.

Here’s an example of how your schedule may look:

Mornings

Instead of rushing out the door because you’re late, get up an hour early. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to get ready. The extra 60 minutes will give you some room to mosey around, sip your coffee, and browse social media while you prepare for the day.

Once you get to work, you’ll be ready to go. Start your work as soon as possible to get a jump on the day!

Midday

By this time of day, you’re likely feeling the midday slump (it’s okay, we all feel it). Take this time as an opportunity to catch a quick break and text with a friend or read your favorite blog.

Breaks are crucial, but it’s important to limit yourself to a few a day. If you stick to a few regularly-scheduled breaks, you’ll avoid slacking off (and having stay late).

You want to stay productive while still giving yourself a breather. Taking a break will make it easier to continue to work up until dinner. Whew – you’re almost there!

Evenings

After classes or work are wrapped up, and you’ve accomplished all that you need to get done, head home to enjoy a nice bite to eat!

Unless you must stay late, don’t!

After all, you’ve been working all day. You deserve a nice, hot meal with your family.

By sticking to a regular routine, you’ll have a much more predictable schedule. You’ll be able to look at your calendar and know how long each task will take. After a while, it shouldn’t be hard to schedule your days accordingly and make it home for dinner every night.

2. Stay Productive All Day 

Procrastination is not your friend.

I repeat:

Procrastination is not a good idea!

Nothing good ever comes from putting off studying, cleaning, and other tedious tasks.

I get it—some tasks just aren’t much fun. No one wants to spend 3 hours updating spreadsheets. But, that doesn’t mean you should avoid them until the last minute.

In fact, those are the tasks that usually get you. Instead of spending an hour following the latest Kim Kardashian drama on Twitter, use that time for work!

There are a few more techniques to help you stay productive all day:

Keep To-Do Lists

Make a checklist at the beginning of each day and complete the items one-by-one. It may seem obvious, but it’ll help you focus!

Track Your Time

Time yourself to see how long it takes you to complete a certain task. Then, you’ll be able to schedule better in the future.

Avoid Distractions

Don’t let friends or coworkers steal your attention – know when to say “no.” 

Stay Organized

Messy backpacks and briefcases are huge time-wasters. How are you supposed to get anything done when you’re constantly digging through stacks of paper?

3. Exercise = Energy

To make it home in time for dinner, focus on keeping that energy up.

How?

By exercising!

I know, I know. Exercise sounds exhausting, not energizing.

However, it turns out that regular exercise fights fatigue, improves stamina, and helps you stay active throughout the day. Just a night or two at the gym each week can have an enormous impact on your energy levels.

If possible, knock out your exercise routine first thing in the morning. It’ll get more blood flowing to your brain and help you perform well at work. Even a quick jog can help you stay awake and alert throughout the day.

4. Work That Brain

Exercising isn’t just important for your biceps; it’s also crucial for your brain. In order to operate at an optimal level, you need to keep your brain strong.

And I don’t just mean using your brain for basic work tasks. I mean putting it through rigorous exercise to keep it sharp. This means using your mind in ways that it’s not used to.

For example:

When was the last time you did a crossword puzzle? If it’s been years, give it a shot! By digging through your mind for the answers, you’ll access the parts of your brain that don’t get much exercise.

The same goes for math. If you’re not mathematically inclined and your job doesn’t require it, try out some math problems. See how many long division problems you can solve without using a calculator.

The more you work your brain, the faster you’ll be able to think and get things done. And getting things done means having more free time! 

5. Stick to Your New Routines

Daily routines are useless if you don’t do them every day. You can create a to-do list one or exercise for a half-hour, but you won’t see results unless you make it a routine.

So, once you start scheduling your days and keeping your mind sharp, make sure to keep it up.

Once you apply these habits, you’ll be able to see how they work and adjust your days accordingly.

For example:

Can’t bring yourself exercise before work? Head to the gym on Saturday mornings!

Don’t have the time to write a to-do list? Use a voice app to speak it into your phone!

Everyone has a different schedule and different needs. Unfortunately, there are no one-size-fits-all solutions to help you get home for dinner.

But, as long as you make an effort to be more productive during the day, you should be able to get home earlier.

Think about it this way:

Even if you leave work 10 minutes earlier each day, you’ll reclaim almost 60 minutes of your life each week!

In closing:

You can stick to the same old habits, or you can develop positive routines that boost your productivity.

Everyone has some unhealthy habits, but there’s always room for improvement. You can improve your life by developing work routines that will set you up for success. 

If you implement just a few changes over time, they’ll make a big difference. Gradually make changes, and soon enough, the new, positive habits will replace the old, bad ones. 

So, start developing new habits today. You deserve to make it home in time to enjoy a tasty meal and unwind before the next day begins!
