1. Clear the Clutter –
Make space in your schedule for the things and people that matter the most. Eliminate anything that interferes with achieving your goal. If you set out to complete the household chores before taking the kids to the movies, ignore the persistent beeping that alerts you to social media updates, better still, hit the mute button. Complete your task then allow 5 mins for a scan for emergency texts. Draw a clear line between what’s necessary and what’s not.
2. Make a Plan –
Take 10 minutes each evening or first thing in the morning to plan what you want to achieve for the day. The old adage “if you aim at nothing you will achieve it every time!” is true. Draw up a realistic To-Do List that covers the essentials but remains achievable.
3. Face Challenges First –
Mulling over the difficult tasks you have to undertake can be a drain on your energy, for example, if you need to confront a subordinate about shoddy work get it over with while you are still fresh in the morning and free up energy for the rest of the day.
4. Multitask or not –

While we can’t avoid interruptions, we can control the manner in which we respond to them. This calls for the ability to distinguish between what should be deferred, denied or dealt with. Your ten year old burning her toast while you’re putting the baby to sleep needs to be dealt with. Taking your girlfriend’s third call for the day while you’re supervising homework? Not so much.
7. Learn to say No –
You can’t please all of the people all of the time so only take on commitments that you know you have the time for and you genuinely care about. Do not double book and then bail out. This will not score you brownie points for effort.
8. Set Timeframes –
This adds an element of measurability. It pushes you to concentrate and complete the task in a set time.
9. Optimize Downtime –
If you’re stuck in traffic, rather than becoming agitated over a situation you have no control over, why not make a mental To-Do List for the afternoon or start planning for the next day? Waiting in line at the supermarket checkout point? This may be a good time to catch up on those pesky social media messages.
10. The Refresh Button –
Taking time to pause and be still may sound like a contradiction when you’re trying to save time, but in reality the stillness can reduce anxiety, give you a clearer perspective and help you enjoy what you’re doing, so take a few moments every so often and just BE.
